This isn't the work of Buddha, but some of the Tibetan mystics that wrote the Book of the Dead. Buddhism offers no ontology for the mind--one of its attractions is its implicit assertion that ontologies are dangerous. (They create illusion as opposed to helping us dissolve them.)

It is my impression that the Book of the Dead was written to handle the problem NDE's presented.

Have you read it? It was compiled over several hundreds of years as Buddhist Priests attended the last rites of their dying. Much of it is compiled from people who experienced NDEs. It's a manual of what death is and more importantly--what to expect as you die. It is not an attempt at explaining NDEs. Buddhism generally dislikes ontologies, it isn't likely to try and "explain" something it ultimately recognizes as unknowable. It's referred to as "The Middle Way" because on one side you have Vedic thought--the material world is unreal, only the spiritual world in Brahma is real--and materialism.

\"Why is it, Master, that ascetics fight with ascetics?\"

\"It is, brahmin, because of attachment to views, adherence to views, fixation on views, addiction to views, obsession with views, holding firmly to views that ascetics fight with ascetics.\"
