There can be a tremendous number of causes, but there is always a choice in how those causes are handled. That choice, makes us responsible for the outcomes. -cause + choice = responsibility
cause + no choice = automaton/inanimate object

What is the purpose of living? How about, 'to reduce needless suffering. It seems to me to be a worthy purpose.
