David: My definition: An emergent propery is something that appears from a material construction that is not itself material. Life and consciousness are two such examples.

It is a quality of existence created by very complex biochemistry, but each molecule is not alive. Same with neurobiology. Eletrochemical energy and neurons are not conscious, but by the complexity of the brain's network of axons and synapses, we experience consciousness. Neither are material. We experience being alive and conscious. I am more of a dualist.-I was not asking about about life and consciousness. I was discussing emergence.-Is a pattern an example of emergence by your definition, and if not why not? Where does it fail according to your definition?
