I started this thread just before I went away for the weekend. 
I now find on my return that there are 22 responses. 
It's very difficult to keep up with you all!-I enjoyed the Bruce Hood video talk. 
The illustration of the "illusory square" 
where he removes the four 3/4-circular black spots 
and leaves a blank area is just one interpretation. 
He could just as well remove the central white square 
and reveal that it is covering four complete spots 
with nothing cut out of them. 
Or maybe it is covering a more elaborate pattern. 
There is no one "right" interpretation.-I find I largely agree with DT and DHW about 
the meaning of self and the existence of limited free-will, 
and with Romansch that 'emergence' is not a very helpful word.
