Humour (Introduction)

Check out the Agnostic card! - http://newhumanist.org.uk/1915 - I thought there was an earlier thread on humour or jokes, but couldn't find it, so started this one. Some people need to lighten up a bit anyway.

Thanks for this link! But why is the secularist/humanist/atheist card the only uninteresting unfunny one? Can humanists not laugh at themselves? I though that was an essential part of humour.

Can humanists not laugh at themselves? I though that was an essential part of humour. - Mark: Does this help: Atheist, etc.: - Age: Starts during teenage rebellion. 5/10 - Wealth: Per individual, but atheism more prevalent if loaded with it. 8/10 - Follower dedication: Fanatical. Constantly implying how dumb everyone else is.Signs on buses. 5/10
 - Daffiest doctrine: Deification of Darwin. He is named "He Who Cannot Be Criticized". (Somewhat like Mohammed) 10/10 - Weapon of Choice: Polemic books by Dawkins, Harris, etc. 8/10 - Easily offended: Never. Superior attitude over all the deluded religious.
 9/10

Brilliant, David! Just what I was asking for. This would be on a level with the others, rather than superior. You should see if they'll accept it!

Thank you, Mark. This forum is open to anyone who can read and write. I wonder if there will be a response to my correction making all equal.

Here are a few (slightly edited) gems from the Penguin Dictionary of Modern Humorous Quotations: - 1) Someone asked Bertrand Russell what he would say when he died and was brought face to face with his maker. He replied: "God, I shall say, why did you make the evidence for your existence so insufficient?" - 2) "An atheist is a man who has no invisible means of support." (John Buchan) - 3) "Atheism [is] a sort of crutch for those who can't stand the reality of God." (Tom Stoppard) - 4) "Go to church this Sunday ... avoid the Christmas rush." (Graffito) - 5) "In real life, Keaton believes in God. But she also believes that the radio works because there are tiny people inside it." (Woody Allen) - 6) "I'm a man of no convictions ... at least I think I am." (Christopher Hampton) - 7) "The trouble with born-again Christians is that they are an even bigger pain the second time around." (Herb Caen) - 8) "If I had been the Virgin Mary, I would have said 'No'." (Stevie Smith) - 9) "Every day people are straying away from the church and going back to God." (Lenny Bruce) - 10) "I do benefits for all religions ... I'd hate to blow the hereafter on a technicality." (Bob Hope)

Here are youtube copies of the original versions of the Eric Idle / Monty Python songs. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWVshkVF0SY - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHPOzQzk9Qo - The English Atheist (Mrs Gumby) web page used to have a music and whistling only version of "Look on the Bright Side of Life" which I rather liked, but via my new link I don't get any sound, alas. - Of course this is not my own philosophy of life. In its way it is as unbalanced as the hymn "All Things Bright and Beautiful". I believe in seeing the ugly and the beautiful, i.e. being realistic.

Taking the axe to religions: - Third panel down the page: - http://www.neilpeart.net/xtras/index.html - I find this funny, but religious believers may not.

I find this funny, but religious believers may not. - I find it just as funny, but it proves my point. No religion has all the answers; so why bother with them. Find your own satisfying answers, if you can.

The 'atheists deify Darwin' joke would be funnier if some actually did. But even his Rottweiler is happy to criticize Darwin: "I enormously admire Darwin. He's the founder of really everything that I do. Of course he was wrong on many things..." (Richard Dawkins). Replace 'Darwin' with 'God' in this quote and find a believer who can continue it!

Brilliant post, George! Thank you. There's as much truth in a laugh as there is in a tear.
