The psychopharmaceuticals can alter brain structure functionality. It is the resulting functional result that shrinks want when they treat their patients. Some abnormal neural connections create the psychosis, no question. Since much axonal networking is from a learning process, some familial schizes may have learned from the abnormal ideations in the family, as well as having aberrent conections in the brain. I've seen families that were living with a phychotic member and had no idea that person was psychotic, as the strange ideations came on very slowly. Like the frog in boiling water.-Structure must impact consciousness, as we see similar personalities and choices in identical twins reared apart. Yet consciousness is an emergent property of the brain, dependent, but perhaps somewhat independent. We don't know yet, and may never know. Phineas Gage comes to mind. More recent research has downplayed some of the wilder descriptions of Gage's changes, but there is no question that brain injury causes change. The father of a young girl I know has lost most of his frontal lobe to ALS and has been extremely cruel to her verbally as a result.
