PART ONE

Slime mold decisions

DAVID: Ecosystems are food supply for living organisms. Without them, no life.

dhw: No one could possibly disagree. How does that come to mean that your God designed all of them, extinct and extant, for the sole purpose of designing us and our food?

DAVID: Remember, I believe in God the designer. We are faith versus disbelief.

dhw: I am not disbelief, and I am questioning the logic of your faith in your theory concerning your God’s motives and methods. I suggest that it is illogical for your God to have mistakenly but deliberately designed econiches which had no connection with us and our food for the sole purpose of designing us and our food.

Still downgrading the concept of ecosystems importance. All ecosystems are interlocking and important to the overall economy of supplying food. God knows what He is doing.

Asteroids

DAVID […] Note how advanced humans have become to defend us from asteroids. And dhw doesn't think we are God's main purpose as we are here to defend everything God created on Earth. I can't change dhw's rigidity. (dhw’s bold)

dhw: […] Do you think he’s watching us now, thinking to himself how lucky it is that he designed us to defend his work, since he couldn’t/can’t do so himself?

DAVID: I am not a deist. God is here, no longer speciating.

dhw: So what do you think he’s doing? In earlier posts you had him watching with interest. Do you see any sign of him actively doing anything now?

DAVID: No, evolution is over.

dhw: So do you think he’s watching us now, thinking to himself….see above, now bolded.

Yes, watching with no need for intervention. We know the next possible massive asteroid crash is 100 years off, as recently described below.

dhw: Do you really think that your all-powerful God, who created the universe, was and still is incapable of stopping these odd chunks of matter from destroying everything he created, and needs us to do it for him? Please reread your bolded statement above before you answer.

DAVID: We are in charge. The next dangerous strike is 100 years off, based on astronomy. We'll be ready. God is conspicuously not acting now.

dhw: So let’s trace the history: your all-powerful God created the asteroids to bring important materials to Earth, but he couldn’t control them so he let them destroy lots of the things he created, but then he created us to protect his creations because all-powerful though he is, he couldn’t do it himself. You are not a deist, so do you think he’s now watching us, and hoping to goodness we’ll be able to do what he can’t do?

God fully controls all. He may well have created Chixculub , as Gerald Schroeder surmised.

Epigenetic control of gene expression

DAVID: Basic cellular functions were set with the origin of life's first cells. We and Archaea share functions as noted here not long ago, remember please. Cells have a degree of self-regulation.

dhw: I’m quite happy to acknowledge that archaea are also cells, and I’m delighted that you agree cells have a degree of self-regulation. So the burning question is how great that degree is. I suggest that it is great enough to enable cell communities to change their structures as and when conditions require adaptation or allow innovation, and to enable cell communities to design their own means of survival, including lifestyles and strategies and the weaverbird’s nest and the opossum's game of play-dead.

The burning is in your fertile mind. Full speciation requires a thinking, designing mind.
