More "miscellany" PARTS ONE & TWO (General)

Horizontal gene transfer

DAVID: Back to a God not in control of His goals. That is not a God at all.

dhw: What plural goals are you talking about? If your God “allowed” organisms to use his mechanisms, he gave them freedom of choice. If his goal was to see what they would do with their freedom of choice, who are you to tell him what gods should or shouldn’t do?

Again, pleading for a God who gives up control of His desires.

Toxoplasma

dhw: The criticism is of your theories, and you have never answered it “realistically”. The fact that all life forms have a biochemical basis does not explain why the countless dead-end life forms, ecosystems, lifestyles, strategies, natural wonders were all necessary for your God to achieve his one and only goal of designing us and our food although they did not lead to us and our food.

You never understand that God can produce any kind of evolutionary process He wishes. The dead ends were food supply for organisms that were also dead ends. All evolutionary processes have dead ends and yet we can trace a direct line from the first Cambrian vertebrate fish to us.

Migration

DAVID: So it will have a comfortable winter season.

dhw: That was/is the purpose of all the migrations. My question concerned why your God made the godwit take this world record diversion when apparently he normally directs the migrants along shorter routes.

Not apparently. The routes all vary from 3-4,000 miles on up.

Neutrino detectors

DAVID[…] We still have no answer for dhw who wonders why the universe is so big and so complex, if all God wanted was to create some humans on Earth. My simple answer is God knows what He is doing.

dhw: If God exists, of course he knows what he is doing, but that does not mean he designed billions of stars and countless dead-end life forms for the sole purpose of creating us and our food! Please stop kidding yourself that your theory is a fact!

DAVID: Not a fact but a reasonable conclusion from logical reasoning.

dhw: What logical reasoning? All you have told us is that God knows what he’s doing, i.e you can’t find a single logical reason why he should have acted according to your personal, fixed belief that he designed billions of stars and countless dead-end life forms for the sole purpose of creating us plus our food. Please stop kidding yourself that a theory which you yourself find totally incomprehensible must be the truth.

And I see a purposeful God who creates everything for a reason. I admit reasons known only to Him, but with our brains we generally figure it out.

Not prepared to stop an asteroid

DAVID: If our God is a deist, we are on our own. If He is a theist He will help.

dhw: But I thought you thought your God was always in total control. If an asteroid hits us, won’t that be his work? Didn’t he chuck Chixculub at the dinosaurs, which he had specially designed as preparation for us and our food, although they had no connection with us and our food? Surely you don’t mean to tell me that your God leaves such matters to chance? Doesn’t that sound like a free-for-all?

DAVID: I'll stick by my statement. I think God will help.

dhw: That doesn’t answer the question concerning his “total control”, but it certainly gives us an insight into your views on God’s human thought patterns and emotions. You pooh-pooh the idea that he might have created life because he wanted something interesting to watch – although you are certain that he watches life with interest – because that makes him human, and yet you are sure that he will save us from a stray asteroid which presumably he hasn’t yet controlled although he is in total control of everything. What non-human thought pattern and/or emotion do you think will make him want to help us?

You can try to humanize my very purposeful. powerful God all you wish to try and deflect criticism of your namby-pamby humanized version of God, which you clearly describe every time
you introduce Him.
