MIGRATION

DAVID: Most organisms, other than humans, do not have the conceptualization capacity to design their future forms. We are now editing DNA, creating mutations, or knocking out areas, to study gene activity.

dhw: A neat change of subject. Migration is not speciation, but you insist that organisms are not intelligent enough to design their own means of survival. Your God apparently has to do it for them, and he has designed every past and present lifestyle, strategy and natural wonder over 3.8 billion years just for us and our food. As regards speciation, not even our ancestors would have sat down and said to one another: “We need to straighten our backs and legs, fiddle with female pelvises, and give ourselves bigger brains.” The theory proposed by Shapiro – which seems to me to make perfect sense – is that these changes take place at cellular level, with the cells changing their structures in response to changing requirements. Yes, our scientists are studying what our cells do, and they are emulating cellular activities. You have inadvertently stumbled on the conclusion to the “brief guide”: it takes intelligence to perform these activities, which provides a powerful argument for the existence of your God, who – if he does exist – would have designed the intelligent cell.

God did design intelligent cells running on His instructions.

Ice fish deny Darwin

QUOTE: “This is more innovation than can be accomplished by random mutation as postulated in Darwinian evolution."

DAVID: a perfect example of Irreducible Complexity, with so many novelties required to be put together at the same time to create this species.

dhw: We agreed years and years ago that random mutations could not be the driving force of evolution. The icefish is indeed a perfect example of how cell communities cooperate in creating/adapting structures that will cope with existing conditions. Apparently its ancestors go back many millions of years. Whether your God intervened to fiddle with the original cells because otherwise he could not possibly have designed us and our food, or (theistic version) he gave all cells the ability to design their own methods of survival is, of course, the subject of many of our discussions.

How do cell committees create all the needed changes all in one leap? That is the meaning of irreducible complexity as a concept.
