PART TWO

How country ants urbanize

DAVID: Ants are part of an urban ecosystem we don't like, but they are necessary elsewhere.

dhw: Same question yet again: necessary for what? Would we humans run out of food and cease to exist if your God had not taught ants to live in our houses?

DAVID: Necessary elsewhere in an ecosystem. in houses, no.

dhw: Stop dodging. You keep telling us that your God designed all ecosystems to provide food for us. It is your anthropocentrism that simply doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.

In your house do the urbanized ants provide food for you??

Plant immunity

DAVID: You have covered all the bases except one: the cells contain from God all the instructions they need to act as if intelligent.

dhw: Your theory that 3.8 billion years ago your God issued instructions for anti-bark-beetle defence or alternatively gave ad hoc divine courses on the subject to enable him to design us and our food seems to me just a little far-fetched, but your faith is unshakable.

DAVID: 3.8 bya the beetle didn't exist. The initial DNA for first life covered the basis for all life. As evolution continued under God's design, DNA was modified. Far-fetched? Only for the doubting.

dhw: Not at all far-fetched. What IS far-fetched is your theory that your God either preprogrammed or dabbled every single DNA modification (not to mention ecosystem, lifestyle, strategy, natural wonder etc.) in the history of life. The cells, you tell us, contain “instructions” for everything, which would include the evolution of beetles as well as defences against them. I suggest it would make more sense if the first cells contained the mechanisms whereby all subsequent cells/cell communities would be able to design their own modifications, ecosystems, lifestyles, strategies, natural wonders etc.

And where did all that needed information come from?

New consciousness theory

dhw: How does any of this “explain” consciousness?

DAVID: You skipped over my comment that the brain works to help us relate to reality.

dhw: I don’t think anyone would dispute that. You have skipped over my whole response to an article which you kindly brought to our attention, and which I find difficult to take seriously. Do you agree with me?

Yes
