PART ONE

Environment control

DAVID: Environmental changes set the way for speciation. I believe God controlled both.

dhw: […] you now believe environmental changes “set the way” for speciation. This is a complete reversal of your previous theory, in which your God designed species in anticipation of environmental changes. Thank you.

dhw: : This is a major shift in your theory, and so I’m reluctant to let it be glossed over. I’ll remind you of it next time you inform us that your God speciated in anticipation of requirements that did not yet exist.

No shift. God designs for future use, but design has to fit current environment.

ANT WOUND TREATMENT

DAVID: The answer to your 'impossible' is yes. They are supplied with all the instructions they need.

dhw: Stated as if it were a fact. That is the problem whenever you are confronted by alternatives: you simply refuse to acknowledge that your theories are not facts!

DAVID: they are my beliefs and conclusions.

dhw: Agreed. You believe that your God provided instructions for ant wound treatment 3.8 billion years ago, or alternatively popped in to give these particular ants lessons in first aid, because otherwise he could never have designed us and our food.

But He did.

Shapiro

DAVID: It all depends on how you use 'novelties' as a theoretical concept.

dhw: I believe the word “novelty” means something new, and I have pointed out many times that the borderline between adaptation and innovation is not clear. However, if you thought an organism was totally new, unlike anything else that had ever existed, I don’t think you would hesitate to call it a new species. None of this makes any difference to Shapiro’s theory that intelligent cells are responsible for “evolutionary novelty” and “new multicellular structures”, which can only mean speciation. The only issue here is that you say cells aren’t intelligent, and only God can create “evolutionary novelty”.

Exactly.

Less frogs, more mosquitos

DAVID: Everything on Earth is a creation/result from God.

dhw: If God exists, and created the universe and life, then of course everything on Earth is the RESULT of his work, but that does not mean he individually designed every “dead-end” organism….etc...(dhw: apologies…I accidentally left out the crucial negative!)

DAVID: Dead ends ARE THE RESULTS of His designs. Stop contradicting yourself.

dhw: I accidentally omitted the negative! But yes, if God designed everything, then clearly he designed all those organisms and ecosystems that came to a dead end, i.e. that did not lead to us and our ecosystems. And this makes nonsense of the theory that he designed every organism and ecosystem as preparation for us and our ecosystems. Thank you for your agreement.

Once again what is the past leads to the present. Dead ends do not create your objections. They don't prove anything.
