Parasites

dhw: I do wish you wouldn’t claim that every believer in God approves of ideas which you yourself can’t explain because they “make sense only to God”. I have offered alternative THEISTIC explanations of evolution which make perfect sense even to you, so please stop using my agnosticism as a cover for your irrationality.

I am not irrational, and neither are you. We think about God in totally different ways. Your theistic explanations are rational only for a very humanized form of God. Stop misusing what I wrote.

Difference

QUOTE: ... While intelligence is clearly an asset in the struggle for survival among species, it is not a purpose of evolution; evolution has no purpose. (David’s bold)

dhw: I don’t know why you’ve bolded this. Nor do I know why it’s been phrased in this way. Evolution is simply a process. If organisms speciate as a result of their seeking new ways of surviving, then survival is the purpose that results in the process of evolution. It’s the organisms, not the process, that have a purpose.

DAVID: You would understand the bold if you believed evolution was a designed process with a purpose.

dhw: Your comment makes even less sense than the bold, since the bold states explicitly that evolution has no purpose!

'No purpose' is exactly the point. How does our intelligence appear without purposeful intent(?), Adler's point!!!

DAVID: the obvious conclusion is natural evolution cannot produce intelligence.

dhw: I have no idea where you could have found that in the article. I can't find any mention of the origin of intelligence.

DAVID: That was whole implied point of the article. The author is constantly quoted in ID!!!

dhw: Maybe, but that is not apparent in the article you reproduced for us. I can only respond to what you show us.

I'm sorry I edited so you missed the point I described now above.

Mimicry

QUOTE: "Bats mimic the buzzing sound of stinging insects to scare off predatory owls. This type of acoustic trickery, when a harmless animal mimics a dangerous one, has been found previously in some insects but has never before been described in mammals."

DAVID: bats, as mammals, are advanced animals with active brains. I'm not surprised they developed this.

dhw: Then you must be surprised to hear that until now, the talent has been observed in insects. What’s your theory, then? Mammals devised the strategy themselves, but God had to train the insects?

Insect wings naturally cause the buzz, or haven't you noticed? Bats reproduce the sound, quite a difference in cause.

A spider hides under water

DAVID: same question about this adaptation is did God help? My rule is to look at the complexity involved, in this case special hydrophobic body hairs. I favor God.

dhw: So God, whose only purpose was to design H. sapiens plus food, specially designed the body hairs of one species of spider so that it could survive under water. And for you this makes more sense than, for instance, your God designing different life forms because he enjoyed creating, and found his creations interesting. Or God creating intelligent life forms and watching with interest all the different ways in which they used their intelligence to improve their chances of surviving.

You always swoop back to your humanized God who needs to entertain Himself. Your God's purpose is to chuckle.
