As I delved into my second book over winter break, "The Code Book," I find out that an interesting result that would not have occurred without organized religion. Studies by Islamic Scholars while Europe was in the throes of the dark ages lead to interesting insights about language as they were trying to attribute the ages of different sayings of Mohammad. Studies on the frequencies of words and letters lead directly to the first basic technique that all cryptanalysts use; probability of certain letters appearing next to each other. This tool would never have been developed without the religious devotion of Islamic Scholars.
