Homes and instinct (Introduction)
In the latest print addition of Sci-Am there is an article describing research into insect and animal homes. It turns out that nest building follows simple mathematical pattern formulas, are specific to each species, and according to a mouse experiment in which two species were hybridized, the gene control was identified. This does not explain how such activity is actually accomplished, as the identification simply shows the control gene, not how it acts. But this article does show that such instinctual activity is coded into the DNA. Studied were termite mounds, ant hills, mouse tunnels, bird nests, wasps, etc.-Title of the article is The Evolution of Architecture
