dhw: What do you expect them to do - grow legs and start looking for their buddies? Of course their function only appears in the full milieu of life! If someone put your brain in a glass jar, do you think it would do anything other than sit in the glass jar?

Exactly my point. That is why life is a miracle, all those dead molecules coming to life in the right arrangement. You don't want to see the miracle, because it implies you have to accept God!
