Genetic Programming (Evolution)

This is the abstract for a really interesting little book I've posted about here a couple times:-"Genetic programming (GP) is a systematic, domain-independent method for getting computers to solve problems automatically starting from a high-level statement of what needs to be done. Using ideas from natural evolution, GP starts from an ooze of random computer programs, and progressively refines them through processes of mutation and sexual recombination, until high-fitness solutions emerge. All this without the user having to know or specify the form or structure of solutions in advance. GP has generated a plethora of human-competitive results and applications, including novel scientific discoveries and patentable inventions. This unique overview of this exciting technique is written by three of the most active scientists in GP. See www.gp-field-guide.org.uk for more information on the book."-What makes this book interesting, is that it starts with a well-defined problem statement, and a bunch of random programs. Since the well-defined problem has a computable answer, the system then tries random combination of algorithms until it finds a string of programs that when used together, solves complex problems. -The technique offers a challenge to David: While yes its true, intelligence had to make the computer, and write the base program, why do you feel you need to insist on divine intervention beyond the problem of life's origination? Are you that married to a personal, benevolent, deity? -Techniques such as Genetic Programming directly utilize the concept of completely random program combinations until one is found to be "fit" i.e., solves the original problem? This technique can create solutions to complex physics problems, without any need for intervention except for pressing "run."

\"It is, brahmin, because of attachment to views, adherence to views, fixation on views, addiction to views, obsession with views, holding firmly to views that ascetics fight with ascetics.\"
